Transfer: Mbappe convinced Alonso to sign £60m star for Chelsea

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe reportedly played a role in Chelsea’s decision to pursue Roma midfielder Manu Kone during the summer transfer window.

According to Foot Mercato, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso consulted Mbappe before approving the club’s move for Kone. The French forward was asked for his opinion about his international teammate.

Chelsea identified Kone as a potential replacement for Enzo Fernandez, who left Stamford Bridge to join Manchester City for a reported £125 million fee.

Kone had attracted interest from several Premier League clubs after two impressive seasons in Italy. His reputation was further boosted by his performances for France at the World Cup.

Alonso, who wanted to strengthen his midfield following Fernandez’s departure, reportedly received a highly positive assessment of Kone from Mbappe. Chelsea subsequently reached an agreement with Roma over a €70 million (£60 million) transfer fee, which was higher than the expected asking price.

The Blues also agreed personal terms with Kone, and the midfielder was reportedly enthusiastic about moving to Stamford Bridge. However, the transfer eventually collapsed after Roma blocked his departure.

Roma were unable to find a suitable replacement for Kone after failing to sign Youssouf Fofana from AC Milan and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Marseille. Chelsea also failed in their attempt to sign Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara.

With both Kone and Camara deals falling through, Chelsea could face midfield problems this season, especially with concerns over Romeo Lavia’s long-term fitness and recent issues involving Moises Caicedo.
