Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has strongly criticised Lisandro Martinez following the defender’s performance in the club’s 2-0 Premier League defeat to Chelsea on Saturday.

Schmeichel described Martinez’s display as “disgraceful”, holding the Argentine largely responsible for United’s disappointing result at Stamford Bridge.

Martinez came under criticism for his defending during Chelsea’s opening goal in the 50th minute, when Morgan Rogers took advantage of the space he was given to break the deadlock.

United’s situation worsened in the 64th minute after Martinez was sent off for striking Wesley Fofana with his forearm inside the penalty area. Cole Palmer subsequently converted the resulting penalty to make it 2-0.

The defeat has increased the pressure on manager Michael Carrick, with United now having gone nine matches without a victory.

Speaking after the match, Schmeichel said: “I place this entirely on Lisandro Martinez’s shoulders. This is an absolute disgrace how he performed in this game.”

He also questioned Martinez’s previous comments about the club and his reaction after being sent off, adding: “What he exhibited today, honestly, leaves me speechless.” Schmeichel further criticised the defender for walking off the pitch shaking his head as though he had done nothing wrong, describing his overall performance as “So poor.”
