The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has congratulated the Flamingos, Nigeria’s women’s Under-17 national football team, following their historic qualification for the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The Nigerian youngsters made history by becoming the first African team to reach the final after defeating Brazil 3-1 in the semi-final in Morocco. The victory also handed Brazil its first defeat of the tournament.

In a statement, NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, Esq., praised the players for their resilience, determination and impressive recovery after losing their opening match 2-1 to Poland.

Director said the team’s achievement had brought pride to Nigeria and lifted citizens’ spirits amid the country’s economic challenges. “You have made our country proud. Your achievements have lifted Nigerians from hunger, poverty, and sadness imposed by the ruling party’s ruinous policies,” he said.

The Flamingos had earlier recorded a 3-1 victory over two-time champions DPR Korea in the group stage, ending the Asian side’s eight-year unbeaten run in the competition. They followed that result with a 2-1 win over Mexico in the Round of 16 and a 1-0 victory against Venezuela in the quarter-finals.

Their impressive campaign continued with a convincing 3-1 triumph over Brazil in the semi-finals, securing their place in Saturday’s final against Japan.
