Former Super Eagles Captain, Troost-Ekong Converts To Islam

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has reportedly converted to Islam after reciting the Shahadah in Doha, Qatar.

The 33-year-old defender, who currently plays for Qatar Stars League club Al-Ahli, reportedly embraced Islam in Doha, according to Qatari newspaper Al-Arab.

Islamic scholar Dr Muhammad Salah also shared a video on his verified Facebook page showing Troost-Ekong reciting the testimonies of faith.

Troost-Ekong began his career in the Arab region in 2024 when he joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Khaleej.

He later moved to Qatar and signed for Al-Ahli in January 2026 on an 18-month contract. Since joining the club, he has made 14 appearances across all competitions, including one appearance this season.

At international level, Troost-Ekong represented Nigeria between 2015 and 2025, making 83 appearances and scoring eight goals. He was part of the Super Eagles team that reached the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final in Côte d’Ivoire, where he was named the tournament’s best player.

The defender also represented Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup and Olympic Games, becoming one of the country’s most experienced defenders before ending his international career.
