LaLiga: Why I Played Ademola Lookman As No. 9 Against Málaga – Diego Simeone
Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has explained why he played Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman as a No. 9 during the club’s 2-0 victory over Málaga in their opening league match.
Lookman was used in a central attacking position as Atletico began the new campaign with a convincing win.
Simeone had to make changes to his attack because some of his regular forwards were unavailable. Julián Alvarez was not included in the matchday squad, while Alexander Sorloth was out with an injury.
As a result, Simeone decided to use Lookman as the central striker.
When asked whether Lookman’s role as a No. 9 was only a temporary solution or could become a long-term option, Simeone explained that the decision was based on the need to create more attacking options.
“Creativity. We are trying to find ways to enhance our performance because, at this moment, we lack a forward who can contribute from the start, as Julián was not selected and Sorloth is injured. That position is crucial, and we hope to improve it,” he stated, as reported by Eldesmarque.

Lookman’s ability to play in different attacking positions gives Simeone more tactical options. His performance as a No. 9 could also provide Atletico with greater flexibility while the club deals with its current shortage of available forwards.
