Legendary Optimus Prime Voice Actor, Peter Cullen Dies At 85

Veteran Canadian actor and voice legend, Peter Cullen, best known as the iconic voice of Optimus Prime, has died at the age of 85.

According to a statement from his family, Cullen died peacefully on Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles, surrounded by his loved ones. The family did not reveal the cause of his death.

Cullen became widely known in 1984 when he first voiced Optimus Prime, the noble leader of the Autobots, in the original Transformers animated television series.

His deep and commanding voice helped make Optimus Prime one of the most loved characters in animation history.

Cullen later returned as the voice of Optimus Prime in several Transformers films, including Michael Bay’s 2007 live-action movie, introducing the character to a new generation of fans.

Beyond Transformers, Cullen had a long and successful career in the entertainment industry. He voiced Eeyore, the gentle and gloomy donkey, in several Winnie the Pooh productions.

He also provided the voice of K.A.R.R. in Knight Rider and the distinctive vocal effects for the Predator in the 1987 science-fiction movie Predator.

Cullen’s portrayal of Optimus Prime left a lasting impact on popular culture. When the character was killed in The Transformers: The Movie in 1986, many fans were deeply saddened and demanded the return of the beloved Autobot leader.

Speaking about his connection to Optimus Prime in a previous interview, Cullen described returning to the role years later as “slipping into an old pair of very comfortable shoes.”

His family paid tribute to him, describing him as a compassionate and principled man whose work inspired generations of fans around the world.

Peter Cullen is survived by his four children, Angus, Claire, Pilar and Clay.
