Manchester United have suffered a double injury setback ahead of their UEFA Champions League encounter against Atletico Madrid, with Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo ruled out of the match.

United manager Michael Carrick confirmed that both players are dealing with what he described as “physical issues”, leaving the club without two important options for the European fixture.

In addition to Shaw and Mainoo, Benjamin Sesko, Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui will also be unavailable for selection. The five players have been left out of United’s 23-man squad for the match.

The absences present a challenge for Carrick as he prepares his team for another demanding Champions League test, particularly with several players unavailable across different positions.

Despite the injury concerns, Manchester United will approach the game with confidence after making an impressive start to their Champions League campaign.

The English side cruised to a 4-0 victory over Sabah in their opening fixture, giving them an early boost as they aim to progress in the competition.
