NSITF restoring hope, dignity of workers through ECS, says MD Faleye

The Managing Director and Chief Executive of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Oluwaseun Faleye, has underscored the role of the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS) in restoring hope and dignity to Nigerian workers who suffer injuries in the line of duty.

He made the remarks in Abuja during the presentation of prosthetic limbs to 10 beneficiaries of the scheme.

Represented by the General Manager, Claims and Compensation, Mrs. Nkiru Ogunnike, the MD said the initiative continues to put smiles on the faces of injured workers by supporting their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

According to him, the ECS goes beyond statutory compensation, reflecting a humane commitment to restoring confidence and preserving the dignity of workers affected by occupational hazards.

He noted that workplace accidents often result not only in physical injuries but also emotional trauma and uncertainty about the future.

Faleye explained that for many Nigerian workers, a single workplace incident can permanently alter the course of their lives.

He however said the intervention of the NSITF through the ECS provides a second chance for victims to rebuild their lives and regain independence.

Highlighting specific cases, he cited the experiences of two beneficiaries, Daniel Etim, a staff of University of Uyo Printing Press and Festus Opkara of Tower Aluminium Laos, as evidence of the scheme’s impact.

Daniel lost his arm in May 2024 after it was trapped in an industrial machine during a routine workday, an injury which led to amputation.

“However, through the intervention of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund as administrators of the ECS, Daniel received medical support, with his treatment expenses fully covered under the Scheme.

“Beyond the payment of medical bills, the Fund extended further rehabilitative support by providing him with a prosthetic arm, reaffirming its commitment not only to compensation but also to restoring dignity, confidence, and functionality to injured workers.

“Daniel’s story underscores the broader mandate of the Employee Compensation Scheme, a social protection mechanism designed to ensure that Nigerian workers who suffer workplace injuries, disabilities, occupational diseases, or death are not abandoned in moments of vulnerability,” the NSITF MD explained.

“Similar to Daniel’s is the story of Festus, whose workplace accident dates back to 2015. Having lost his hand in a workplace incident, Festus lived for years with the emotional burden that accompanied his physical condition.

“Beyond the trauma of the accident itself was the constant public attention, the quizzical looks, and the pitying stares that made social interactions difficult,” he stated, adding that “NSITF provided Festus with a silicone prosthetic hand, helping him regain not only physical confidence but also a renewed sense of inclusion and self-worth”.

Highlighting the significance of the ECS, the MD restated that “For beneficiaries like Daniel and Festus, the interventions of the NSITF have become more than institutional obligations; they represent hope, restoration, and reassurance that injured workers are not left to navigate tragedy alone”.

To the MD, these examples speak to a frequently overlooked dimension of workplace injuries: the psychological and emotional scars that persist long after physical wounds may have healed.

“These interventions highlight the critical role of the NSITF in implementing the Employee Compensation Scheme, which continues to serve as a vital safety net for Nigerian workers in both the public and private sectors”, he concluded.

While reflecting on how his life was transformed, one of the beneficiaries, Festus Okpara enthused: ‘I thank NSITF for coming all this way to help. At least with this (a silicone artificial hand), I can go out in public and feel free. NSITF has reduced the level of trauma'”.

It would be recalled that the ten beneficiaries were among the 78 who recently got fitted with artificial limbs in the ongoing rehabilitation and reintegration program of the NSITF.”

Boa Constrictors Shock Golfers On UK Course

Published

on

DARLINGTON — Golfers in County Durham faced an unusual hazard this month when two boa constrictors were discovered on the Blackwell Grange golf course. The snakes, each measuring around three metres, were found a week apart, sparking concern about the abandonment of exotic pets in the UK.

The first boa was spotted on 13 June during a junior golf lesson. A 12-year-old girl’s shot landed directly on the snake, prompting instructor Aaron Cox to act quickly. Using his golf club, Cox moved the reptile away from the course before securing it in a box.

Just a week later, on 20 June, Cox encountered another boa near the rough. He repeated the same process, removing the snake and taking it to a nearby reptile shop. Unfortunately, both snakes later died, reportedly due to illness.

Cox, originally from Australia, said he was accustomed to seeing snakes in his home country but had never encountered large boas in England. He noted that while adders are occasionally seen on UK courses, the presence of boa constrictors was unprecedented.

“I’ve been here for six, seven summers, and not once has it ever happened. Now we’ve seen two in a week, and there are reports of more in North Yorkshire,” he said.

Boa constrictors are native to South America and can grow beyond three metres. They are non-venomous and generally not considered dangerous to humans, preferring smaller prey. However, they require extensive care, food, and space, making them challenging pets.

Cox suggested the snakes were abandoned by their owner, possibly due to the high cost of care and their deteriorating health. He criticised the act as cruel, urging pet owners to seek help from animal welfare organisations rather than dumping animals.

“It’s a shame and a cruel act by whoever did it. People should think twice before keeping pets they cannot look after,” he said.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) expressed concern over the incident. The charity urged anyone with information about the snakes’ abandonment to come forward, stressing that exotic pets should never be released into the wild.

The RSPCA highlighted that reptiles often suffer when abandoned, as they are unable to adapt to the UK climate and may carry diseases.

The discovery has raised questions about the growing trend of keeping exotic pets in Britain. While snakes like boas are popular among enthusiasts, their long lifespan — often exceeding 30 years — and demanding care requirements make them unsuitable for many households.

Animal welfare advocates warn that abandonment poses risks not only to the animals but also to local ecosystems and communities. Exotic species can spread disease or disrupt native wildlife if released into unsuitable environments.

Golfers at Blackwell Grange expressed shock at the unusual hazard. For many, the incident highlighted the need for stricter regulations on exotic pet ownership and better public awareness about the responsibilities involved.

Local residents also voiced concern about safety, though experts emphasised that boas are not aggressive toward humans. The greater issue, they said, was the welfare of the snakes themselves.

The appearance of boa constrictors on a UK golf course has drawn attention to the challenges of exotic pet ownership and the consequences of abandonment. While the reptiles posed little danger to golfers, their mistreatment underscores the importance of responsible animal care.

Authorities and welfare groups continue to investigate, hoping to prevent similar incidents and ensure exotic pets are handled with proper responsibility.

LONDON — Arsenal have confirmed the permanent signing of Ecuador international Piero Hincapié from Bayer Leverkusen, following a season-long loan that saw him play a crucial role in the club’s Premier League triumph.

The 24-year-old centre-back joined the Gunners at the start of the 2025/26 campaign and quickly established himself as a reliable option in Mikel Arteta’s defensive setup. His performances earned him a permanent deal, which will officially take effect on July 1.

Hincapié featured in 39 matches across all competitions, including 20 Premier League starts. His presence contributed to Arsenal’s defensive solidity, with the team conceding only 27 goals throughout the league season — one of the best records in the division.

He also started in the UEFA Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, underlining his importance in high-pressure fixtures.

Before arriving in north London, Hincapié had already built a strong reputation in Germany. He made 166 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen and was part of the squad that won the Bundesliga title in 2023/24, completing an unbeaten domestic campaign.

His career began at Independiente del Valle in Ecuador before moving to Talleres de Córdoba in Argentina in 2020. After one season, he secured a move to Leverkusen, where he developed into one of the Bundesliga’s most dependable defenders.

On the international stage, Hincapié has earned 54 caps for Ecuador and represented his country at four major tournaments, including the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup. His experience at both club and international levels adds depth to Arsenal’s defensive options.

The permanent signing reflects Arsenal’s broader strategy of consolidating their squad after reclaiming the Premier League title. Manager Mikel Arteta has consistently emphasised the importance of defensive organisation, and Hincapié’s addition strengthens the team’s long-term plans.

The Gunners’ backline, which already includes William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães, now has another proven performer capable of handling the demands of both domestic and European competitions.

With the deal finalised, Arsenal will enter the new season with renewed confidence in their defensive unit. Hincapié’s adaptability and composure are expected to provide balance and competition within the squad.

The move also signals Arsenal’s intent to maintain momentum after their title-winning campaign, ensuring they remain competitive in England and Europe.

Piero Hincapié’s permanent transfer marks a significant step in Arsenal’s preparations for the future. His successful loan spell, combined with his international pedigree, makes him a valuable addition to Arteta’s squad.

As the Gunners prepare for another demanding season, the Ecuadorian defender’s presence is set to reinforce their ambitions of sustaining success at the highest level.

NNPP Eyes Strategic Alliances Ahead of 2027 Elections

KANO — The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has signaled readiness to enter alliances with other political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing consensus and strategic partnerships as vital to its electoral prospects.

Kano State Chairman of the NNPP, Senator Mas’ud Doguwa, disclosed this during an interview, stressing that politics is about consultation and shared interests. He explained that the party would not rule out collaboration if such arrangements strengthen its position both in Kano and nationally.

Doguwa said the NNPP is focused on expanding its reach and consolidating its structures before the next election cycle. He noted that alliances could become necessary to advance the party’s objectives and deliver results for supporters.

“We are open to alignment with other political parties ahead of the 2027 elections, both at the state and national levels. Politics is about interest, consultation and building consensus, so we are ready to work with others where necessary,” he stated.

The chairman dismissed a faction led by a rival group within the party, describing it as illegitimate. He accused its leader, identified as Abia, of working in the interest of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to destabilise the NNPP in Kano.

“That faction is not part of us. As far as we are concerned, they do not represent the NNPP. We know what they are doing and who they are working for,” Doguwa said.

He alleged that the faction’s activities were designed to weaken the NNPP’s structure in Kano, but insisted that the recognised leadership remained intact and in control.

Despite recent defections and political realignments in the state, Doguwa expressed confidence in the NNPP’s relevance ahead of 2027. He said the party continues to enjoy grassroots support and remains a strong force in Kano politics.

He added that consultations with stakeholders and supporters are ongoing to reposition the party for future contests. According to him, the NNPP’s resilience and adaptability will ensure it remains competitive in the evolving political landscape.

The NNPP’s openness to alliances reflects a broader trend in Nigerian politics, where parties often form coalitions to strengthen their chances in national elections. With 2027 approaching, discussions around partnerships are expected to intensify as parties seek to consolidate influence.

In Kano, the NNPP has been a major player, particularly under the influence of former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, whose political base remains significant. Doguwa’s remarks suggest the party is preparing to leverage both internal strength and external partnerships to remain relevant.

The NNPP’s position underscores the importance of strategy and consensus in Nigeria’s political process. By keeping the door open to alliances, the party signals its willingness to adapt and collaborate in pursuit of electoral success.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, the NNPP’s ability to balance internal unity with external partnerships will determine its strength at the polls. For now, the message from Kano is clear: alliances are not off the table, and the party is ready to negotiate where interests align.
