Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi could face a three-match suspension following his straight red card in Coventry City’s 5-0 defeat to Brighton on Sunday.

Awoniyi was sent off in the 53rd minute of the Premier League fixture at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The Nigerian forward caught Brighton defender Maxim De Cuyper with his elbow during an aerial challenge, leading the referee to show him a straight red card.

The decision was reviewed by VAR, but the dismissal was upheld, leaving Awoniyi facing the possibility of a three-match ban.

The striker only joined Frank Lampard’s Coventry side from Nottingham Forest during the summer transfer window.

Awoniyi has made three league appearances since his move, playing 181 minutes without scoring. The red card against Brighton was also the first Premier League dismissal of his career.

His previous disciplinary record in England’s top flight had been clean, but he could now miss Coventry’s next three league matches if the standard suspension is confirmed.
