Reps dissolve all ad hoc committees

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen has ordered the dissolution all ad hoc committees of the House with immediate effect, citing the expiration of the time allotted for them to complete their assignments and submit reports.

The directive, contained in a circular signed by the Clerk of the House of Representatives, Sidi Ibrahim, Saturday said the dissolution took effect from Friday, August 28, 2026.

The Clerk said the decision followed earlier announcements directing all ad hoc committees to conclude their assignments and submit their reports in accordance with the Rules and established practices of the House.

According to the circular, only two of the committees sought and obtained extensions of time in line with Order Eighteen, Rule 5 of the Standing Orders of the House. The circular added that the two-week extensions granted to the committees had since elapsed.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Honourable Members are reminded that Ad Hoc Committees are temporary Committees of the House established for specific and time-bound mandates.

They are not intended to subsist indefinitely beyond the purpose and period for which they were constituted,” the circular stated.

The Clerk further cited Order Eighteen, Rule 11, Paragraph 5 of the Standing Orders, which provides for limitations as to the time within which committees are expected to submit their reports.

He said having exceeded the time allotted to them, the continued existence of the affected ad hoc committees was no longer tenable.

“Consequently, with effect from Friday 28th August 2026, all Ad Hoc Committees of the House stand dissolved; and activities being carried out in the name of such Committees shall cease forthwith,” Ibrahim stated.

The affected committee chairmen were directed to forward all outstanding reports, working documents, records and other materials relating to their assignments to the Office of the Clerk for safekeeping.

The Clerk urged members of the dissolved committees to take note of the directive and ensure strict compliance.

The development comes as the House seeks to enforce greater adherence to its rules on the duration and reporting obligations of temporary committees.
