Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has released a detailed statement explaining why he left the national team camp and revealing what led to his fallout with head coach Jorge Jesus.

Ronaldo said the disagreement began after Jesus failed to honour an agreement concerning his involvement during the international break. He explained that Jesus had initially presented a plan for him to play the first and final matches, with his minutes managed for physical reasons.

Ronaldo said he was later asked during the Norway camp if he could play 30 minutes. Although this was outside the original plan, he agreed and warmed up from half-time, only to remain on the bench until the final whistle. “The coach had broken his word to me,” Ronaldo stated.

He said he later held a meeting with Jesus and other officials, where they agreed that the coach would explain the situation publicly. Ronaldo claimed Jesus promised to acknowledge that he had proposed the plan, that Ronaldo had never demanded playing time and that it was a mistake to send him to warm up without eventually bringing him on.

However, Ronaldo said the subsequent press conference did not reflect what had been agreed privately. “It was the second time he had broken his word to me,” he said, adding that he decided to leave the camp because he believed remaining would negatively affect the team.

Ronaldo also apologised for leaving the camp and for failing to greet supporters after the match in Norway. He said the responsibility was his and accepted that the Portuguese Football Federation should assess and punish his actions. “I also owe an apology to my national team teammates for having left the camp,” he said.

The 41-year-old also confirmed that he remains available for Portugal in the future. He recalled staying with the national team after learning of his father’s death and said representing his country has always been about competing and winning. Ronaldo concluded: “Therefore, if I am physically well, playing for my club, with goals I hope, after serving the suspension that may be applied to me, I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team.”
