Ronaldo Shouldn’t Remain In National Team Just Because Of Stature – Luis Figo Tells Portugal Coach

Former Portugal captain Luis Figo has shared his thoughts on Cristiano Ronaldo’s future with the national team, saying the decision over his international career should be based on what is best for the team.

Pressure on Ronaldo to retire from international football has increased following Lionel Messi’s decision to end his career with Argentina. Messi announced his retirement on August 31 after Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final and the death of his father, Jorge.

Ronaldo, however, has not indicated any intention to retire from Portugal. During the current international break, the 41-year-old said he would be willing to leave the national team if the coaching staff decided that he was no longer the right player for the squad.

Ronaldo is also still chasing his target of scoring 1,000 career goals. He is reportedly 21 goals short of the milestone, which could influence his desire to continue playing for Portugal. Head coach Jorge Jesus recently left him on the bench during Portugal’s 2-1 win over Norway, with Ronaldo remaining an unused substitute.

Figo said the final decision should ultimately belong to Ronaldo, while also stressing that the coach has the responsibility to decide whether he deserves a place in the team.

When asked if Ronaldo should retire like Messi, Figo told ESPN FC: “Of course, he should decide what he wants. I have big respect and consideration for him because of what he achieved all these years in football. He can make a personal decision, but in terms of the national team, it’s [also] the coach who has to decide.”

Figo added: “It’s not because he has a stature, or what he means to football, that he should have a place [in the national team]. It’s a big responsibility for the coach. But in terms of his decision, it is only him that can say what he wants. So it’s difficult for me to talk.” Ronaldo will now hope to return to Portugal’s starting line-up when they face Denmark in the UEFA Nations League.
