Super Falcons: Tinubu redeems $100,000 promise for 10th WAFCON triumph
President Bola Tinubu has fulfilled his $100,000 financial promise to Nigeria’s Super Falcons following their historic victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Tinubu made the pledge after the Nigerian team secured their 10th continental title, further extending their record as the most successful side in the competition’s history.
The Super Falcons produced a remarkable comeback in the final, defeating hosts Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses 3-2 to lift the trophy.
Morocco took a commanding 2-0 lead in the first half, but Nigeria responded after the break with three goals to turn the match around.
Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi and substitute Jennifer Echegini scored the goals that secured Nigeria’s victory.
However, the Super Falcons were unable to defend their title at the 2026 WAFCON, suffering a quarter-final defeat to Cameroon.
