Turkey: Iheanacho Sets New Record With Goals In 10 Consecutive Matches
Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho has made history in Turkish football after scoring in ten consecutive matches in the Turkish First League, setting a new milestone with Bursaspor.
The Nigerian striker delivered an outstanding performance on Thursday night, scoring twice and providing an assist as Bursaspor defeated Muğlaspor 3-0 at Muğla Atatürk Stadyumu.
The first half ended goalless, and Iheanacho initially thought he had opened the scoring in the 48th minute with a header during a goalmouth scramble. However, the effort was ruled out for offside before he eventually broke the deadlock in the 58th minute, finishing a pass from Halil Akbunar.
According to Turkish newspaper Hürriyet, Iheanacho’s scoring streak has surpassed the records of Galatasaray legend Metin Oktay and former Turkish international Saffet Sancaklı, who both scored in nine consecutive league matches.
Oktay achieved the feat with Galatasaray during the 1962–63 season, while Sancaklı matched the record with Kocaelispor in the 1995–96 campaign. Before Thursday’s match, Iheanacho had also set a Bursaspor club record by scoring in nine consecutive games, surpassing Fernandao’s previous mark of eight matches in the 2014–15 season.
Iheanacho doubled Bursaspor’s advantage in the 73rd minute with a left-footed finish from inside the penalty area. Hüseyin Maldar then completed the 3-0 victory in the 83rd minute, converting an assist from the Nigerian forward.
