UNL: Portugal Could Ban Ronaldo From Representing National Team For Six Months
Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo could face a suspension from representing the national team if he is found to have “abandoned” the squad.
According to the Daily Mail, the potential suspension could last between one and six months under the disciplinary rules of the Portuguese Football Federation.
The federation’s disciplinary code states: “Any player who, having been regularly called up, unjustifiably abandons or fails to appear for training, a match, or any activity of the national teams or related to the sporting representation of the FPF or Portugal, will be sanctioned with a suspension of one to six months.”
Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp on Wednesday following a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus over his playing time.
The 41-year-old was subsequently replaced as captain, with Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes taking over the role for Portugal.
Galatasaray winger Rafael Leao also took Ronaldo’s No.7 shirt for Portugal’s Nations League fixture against Denmark.
