UNL: Ronaldo May No Longer Start Every Portugal Match – Jesus

Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has said Cristiano Ronaldo may no longer start every match, with the forward’s physical condition now a major factor in deciding his playing time.

Jesus explained that Ronaldo’s performance in training will also influence whether he starts Portugal’s upcoming UEFA Nations League match against Norway.

The coach added that he and Ronaldo have already reached an understanding regarding the veteran forward’s playing time and the need to manage his workload.

“I have already discussed this with him. He played 65 minutes, and I will assess his condition to determine if he starts or comes off the bench, because regardless of our preferences, Cris is not Joao Neves, who is 20 years old and capable of playing consecutive matches every three days,” Jesus told Ojogo.

“We must consider all factors, but he is among the players whose training performance will provide valuable insight,” the Portugal manager added.

Ronaldo started Portugal’s 1-0 victory over Wales in their opening Group Four Nations League match but had a quiet outing, with his goal ruled out for offside. Jesus replaced him with Goncalo Ramos in the 67th minute.

Ronaldo will now hope to start or make an impact when Portugal face Norway at Ullevaal Stadion in Oslo on Sunday, September 27, with Norway coming into the game after victories over Denmark and Brazil.
