WAFCON 2026: Madugu Apologises For Super Falcons’ Dismal Showing, Dismisses Sack Fears

Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has apologised to Nigerians following the team’s disappointing performance at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The 10-time African champions were knocked out in the quarter-finals after losing 1-0 to Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses.

Nigeria also missed the chance to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after suffering a 2-1 defeat to South Africa. This means the Super Falcons will miss the Women’s World Cup for the first time since the tournament began in 1991.

Madugu said his players gave their best throughout the competition, but admitted that their efforts were not enough. He also accepted responsibility for the team’s disappointing campaign.

“First of all, I have to apologise to Nigerians over our inability to make it to the World Cup. It was not our intention.

“We came and did the best that we could, but our best was not good enough. We are very sorry for that, and we take full responsibility for everything that happened,” Madugu told reporters after the game against South Africa.

The coach has faced increasing pressure following the Super Falcons’ poor showing, with some calls for him to be removed from his position.

However, Madugu said he is not worried about being sacked and remains grateful for the opportunity to serve Nigeria.

“I am not afraid of being sacked. To the glory of God, I have served my country. It was a privilege that was given to me,” Madugu added.

“So far, I have played almost 28 games, won 19, lost four and drawn four. But this defeat came at crucial moments that people did not expect.”

Madugu’s comments come as the Super Falcons face the need to regroup, learn from their mistakes and prepare for future competitions.
