2026 U-17 WWC: Poland defeat proved turning point for Flamingos – Busari
Flamingos head coach Akeem Busari has revealed that Nigeria’s opening defeat to Poland served as a wake-up call for his team at the ongoing 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria began the tournament with a 2-1 loss to Poland but responded strongly, recording victories against Puerto Rico and defending champions North Korea to secure a place in the Round of 16.
The Flamingos finished second in Group B behind North Korea, who topped the group on goal difference.
Busari admitted that the defeat to Poland came as a major surprise, particularly given the team’s impressive performances before the competition.
“The loss to Poland was a shocker. It has been the only match I have lost since I took over this team,” Busari said.
He also highlighted Nigeria’s unbeaten record in their preparations and qualifying campaign, adding: “We played over 20 friendly matches without losing and won all four qualifying matches.”
