Japan captain Honoka Yotsumoto has said her team is determined to honour former players by winning the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title.

The Little Nadeshiko are preparing for their fourth appearance in the competition’s final, having previously reached the decisive match in 2010, 2014 and 2016.

Japan’s only title came in 2014 in Costa Rica, where they defeated Spain 2-0 in San Jose to become champions.

However, Nigeria’s Flamingos stand between Japan and a second world title. The Nigerian team are also chasing their first-ever U-17 Women’s World Cup trophy.

The Flamingos have enjoyed an impressive tournament in Morocco, defeating defending champions DPR Korea 3-1 in the group stage before recording another 3-1 victory over Brazil in the semi-finals.

Despite Nigeria’s strong performances, Yotsumoto remains focused on leading Japan to victory. She said the team wants to create history while recognising the efforts of previous generations of Japanese players.

“We carry the hopes and feelings of the players who came before us. We want to honour them by bringing the trophy back to Japan,” she told FIFA.
