Ballon D’Or 2026: Why I Don’t Publicly Tip Myself To Win Award

Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane has explained why he does not publicly back himself to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or despite an outstanding season.

The England captain is among the 30 nominees for the prestigious award after scoring 73 goals across 65 matches for club and country during the 2025-26 season.

Speaking to Marca, Kane said he has always preferred to remain modest and avoid publicly promoting himself.

“It’s complicated. I’ve never liked to talk too much about myself. All I’d say is that last season was incredible, both personally and as a team. It was, by far, the best season of my life.”

Kane noted that scoring 73 goals, the second-highest tally in history behind Lionel Messi’s 82-goal 2011-12 season, was an achievement he was extremely proud of.

“It’s true that reaching 73 goals, the second-highest tally in history [after Leo Messi’s 82 in 69 games in 2011-12], speaks for itself. I’m extremely proud of it. I can only thank my teammates and everyone who helped make it possible.”

However, the 33-year-old said the Ballon d’Or is decided by voters and therefore remains outside his control.

“But the Ballon d’Or isn’t in my hands. It depends on the people who vote… I know there’s going to be a lot of talk about the Ballon d’Or until October, because it’s a major award.”

Kane enjoyed a highly successful campaign with Bayern Munich, helping the club win the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal and Super Cup.

He also impressed for England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scoring six goals and providing one assist as the team finished third.

His 73 goals for club and country have placed him among the leading contenders for the award alongside Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Rodri and Lamine Yamal.
