Nigerian singer Teniola Apata, popularly known as Teni, has revealed how she was sacked from two nanny jobs within days, blaming her shyness and inability to prepare some of the meals she claimed she could cook.

The singer shared the experience during an interview with Queen’s Mic, where she recalled struggling to keep the jobs despite wanting to earn extra money while in school.

According to Teni, she worked as a nanny on two occasions but did not last up to one week in either position.

She explained that her shyness affected her experience and recounted how her second employer dismissed her after she prepared a meal that did not meet expectations.

Teni said the second job was with a female doctor whose husband was Nigerian.

During the application process, she listed cooking among her skills and claimed she could prepare meals such as jollof rice and fries. However, she did not expect her employer to ask her to demonstrate those skills.

Recounting the experience, the singer said:

“So I went to apply for this nanny job. I was once a nanny. For three days. After three days, you are fired. I did two nanny jobs. I did not last up to one week. Shy.

“The second nanny person was a doctor. Her husband was Nigerian. And in the application, when they asked me what I can do, I said I can cook jollof, fries, cook this. I didn’t know they would tell me to cook. Ah ah, you lied on your CV. Where did Trina ask me to cook jollof fries? Let me just say, I cooked rubbish. That was the end of your job. She just said don’t bother coming.”

Teni added that the experience left her frustrated because her parents had not pressured her to get a job while she was still in school.

She explained that she only wanted to earn extra money but ended up losing both opportunities.

The singer said she turned to God in frustration after being dismissed, questioning why her attempts to earn additional income had resulted in repeated setbacks.

“So I went to God angry. I was like, my parents never asked me to get a job because I was in school, right? But I just wanted to get a job so that, you know, extra funds. And I’m over here getting fired. What’s happening? My spirit told me,” she added.
