Stop Hitting Women — Nollywood Veteran RMD Joins Fight Against Gender Based Violence

Veteran Nollywood actor Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD) has called on men to stop abusing women and support efforts to end gender-based violence in Nigeria.

The 65-year-old actor made the appeal in Abuja after becoming a key stakeholder in the Male Feminists Network, an initiative that promotes women’s rights and fights gender-based violence.

Speaking at the event, RMD stressed the need for greater inclusion of women, especially in leadership and government positions.

According to him, women have consistently demonstrated strong leadership abilities.

He said:

“Personally, when I did a film two years ago, I had about 80 percent women in the crew. I always tell people in my profession that if you want to have anything done in government, put a woman in charge, and you can sleep with your eyes closed.”

The veteran actor also urged men to treat women with dignity and respect instead of objectifying or abusing them.

He emphasized that disagreements should never result in physical violence.

“Just give respect to women and treat them like human beings, or the way you would treat your daughter or your wife—with respect and dignity. Don’t objectify them or perpetrate violence. Correcting someone does not mean hitting or beating them. It is easier to talk to people these days than to use your fists.”

RMD further stated that ending gender-based violence is a responsibility that should not be left to women alone.

He called on men to change harmful attitudes and support organizations working to protect women’s rights.

“There are institutionalized and systemic ways that women’s rights are trampled upon in Nigeria, and it is not something only women can fight. We also have to lend our voices to organizations working for women’s rights and against gender-based violence.”

Also speaking at the event, public affairs analyst and gender advocate Dr. Otive Igbuzor said traditional rulers, respected public figures, and religious leaders have important roles to play in preventing gender-based violence and promoting respect for women.
