FIFA U-20 WWC: How Falconets’ Dream Faded Against Colombia

Nigeria’s Falconets were eliminated from the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup at the quarter-final stage after suffering a late 1-0 defeat to Colombia on Sunday.

The decisive goal came in stoppage time at Stadion Miejski in Łódź, ending Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals after an impressive recovery from a difficult start to the tournament.

The Falconets lost 2-0 to Spain in their opening Group F game before playing out a goalless draw against China. They then responded strongly by defeating New Caledonia 10-1 to qualify for the knockout stage.

Moses Aduku’s side continued their impressive run with a 3-0 victory over England in the Round of 16. Tosin Rafiu, Seimeyeha Akekoromowei and Mercy Mamudu scored, while goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma saved a crucial penalty.

Nigeria created several good chances against Colombia, with Akekoromowei hitting the crossbar and Adeshina forcing a strong save from goalkeeper Luisa Agudelo. However, Kafayat Mafisere was sent off in the 77th minute following a VAR review.

Colombia eventually punished Nigeria in the second minute of stoppage time. Valerin Loboa’s first attempt was blocked by Uzoma, but she reacted quickly to score from the rebound and send Colombia into the semi-finals.

Eagle Stars FC coach Isma’il Musa blamed Nigeria’s failure to convert chances and the red card, while journalist Femi Fabunmi pointed to a late loss of concentration and defensive mistakes. Fabunmi also said some of the Falconets should be promoted to the senior national team, while the semi-finals will see Spain face Italy and Colombia take on North Korea.
