Taraba: Hoodlums raid Female hostel, rape student

Hoodlums allegedly raided a female hostel at Taraba State College of Nursing, Jalingo and raped a female student.

The incident happened Sunday midnight, and the hoodlums were said to have cut a finger of the rape victim.

Daily Trust gathered that the victim was taken to GSCN hospital at Mile 6 Area in Jalingo for treatment.

Daily Trust learnt that following the attack, hundreds of students of the college staged a peaceful protest at the gate of the college Monday morning, demanding urgent action by the Taraba State Government and security agents to protect them from  attacks by hoodlums.

An official of the Students Union in the college, who sought anonymity for fear of victimization, confirmed that the attack, adding that the attack was the second in two weeks.

According to him, last week the hoodlums attacked some of the student hostels and carted away phones and other valuable.

He said the hoodlums came in their number Sunday night and attacked one of the female student hostels and raped one of the students and also carted away phones and other valuables, too.

He also stated that the hoodlums also cut one of the fingers of the students after taping her, saying she  is now on admission at a private hospital located at Mile 6 Area in Jalingo.

“When the first attack happened last week, we complained to the school authorities and the commissioner of Tertiary Education visited the college and promised that security measures will be put in place in all the hostels but nothing was done,” he said.

He lamented that all the students of the college including the the female students are staying in hostels outside the college, adding that hostels for females and males were completed inside the college, but are yet to be put to use for the students.

“We have seven hostels one for males and six for females, but all students are located outside the premises of the college and there is no adequate security, which expose the students to danger,” he said.

When contacted, the Provost of Taraba State College of Nursing, Jalingo, Dr Dorcas Dugule, said she was on top of the issue and she should be given time.

“I am on top of the issue. I will not speak, please. Give me time,” she said.
