US media dispute:  White House launches ‘Trump TV’

The White House has launched a 24-hour streaming channel featuring footage of President Donald Trump and activities of his administration, amid an escalating dispute over media access between the Trump administration and major United States news organisations.

The new service, dubbed “TRUMP TV: The Essentials Station,” began streaming on Monday through the White House website and YouTube, offering viewers access to presidential speeches, administration announcements, videos and previously recorded highlights.

According to the White House, the channel is designed to provide real-time updates and bring together the administration’s “biggest moments” in a single platform.

The launch came as the traditional White House television press pool was suspended following the administration’s decision to bar CNN, MS NOW and Politico from access to the White House.

The television pool is traditionally operated on a rotating basis by major US networks, with CNN, ABC, CBS, Fox News and NBC taking turns to provide video coverage of presidential events for distribution to other news organisations.

CNN was scheduled to provide the pooled television coverage on Monday but was prevented from carrying out the assignment.

Following CNN’s exclusion, ABC, CBS, Fox News and NBC declined to provide a replacement crew, effectively bringing the traditional pooled television coverage of Trump’s events to a halt.

The dispute has also reached the courts, with CNN, MS NOW and Politico challenging the administration’s decision to restrict their journalists’ access to the White House.

The White House has defended its decision to impose the restrictions, while the affected news organisations have maintained that the measures interfere with their ability to independently cover the administration.

The impact of the dispute became particularly visible on Monday during Trump’s appearance at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new White House helipad.

Although television viewers were able to see footage of the event, they could not hear Trump’s remarks through the normal pooled television feed, highlighting the consequences of the suspension of the traditional arrangement.

Against this backdrop, the launch of TRUMP TV gives the White House a direct platform for distributing video of Trump and official administration events without relying on the established television pool operated by news organisations.

The channel’s initial programming consisted largely of previously recorded footage, presidential highlights and other material rather than functioning exclusively as a live feed of events taking place at the White House.

The White House has described the service as a 24-hour stream featuring major presidential remarks, administration videos and highlights, providing viewers with a centralised source for footage of Trump and his administration.

The launch therefore represents a new avenue for the White House to distribute its own video coverage at a time when the traditional system for providing pooled television access to presidential events has been disrupted by the ongoing dispute with several major news organisations.
